TOPIC: The Psychological Impact Encountered by Rape Victims in a Gender
On 2nd October 2013, I was invited to give a talk at the University of Malaya’s Law Faculty at their Law Seminar Presentation by a group of students and their lecturer from the faculty. This presentation was part of the family law curriculum and the talk opens up the students and lecturer’ understanding to the psychological impact that rape victims suffers. These psychological injuries can range from developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, avoidant disorders and even Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) and other related disorders. As these are psychological scars, it cannot be seen easily and it is hard to prove in the courts. That is reason it is not easy to make claims against the rapist or domestic rape and all judgments are based on the physical injuries, not psychological wounds. In my talk, I focused on how the psychological scarring impacts on their victim’s entire life that no amount of money can compensate for the traumas caused by the rapist. This part of the presentation really opens up the students and lecturer to a whole awareness and understanding regarding the complexities of such psychological injuries rape victims must suffer and future lawyers with this awareness will help rape victims to receive a fairer judgment in future.
